Hunger Banquet

Life isn’t fair and neither is this. At the Hunger Banquet, the place where you sit and the meal that you eat are determined by the luck of the draw. Just as in real life, some of us are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty. Life in a third world country is hard to imagine unless you’re really there; The Hunger Banquet is our opportunity to take you.

How the Hunger Banquet  Works:

The Eller Atrium will be divided into sections for each level of income. Based on the current statistics of people in poverty, we will be allotting the appropriate number of tickets for each income level into a lottery. Guests will randomly draw a ticket that will assign them into various income levels, determining their seating to a specific section. Depending on their seating, guests will either be served a filling meal, while others will be able to eat what they can “afford”: a simple meal or shared portions of rice and water. While not all guests will leave with full stomachs, we hope many will gain a new perspective on the reality of hunger and poverty in our world.

Who are we?

Loans Across Borders is a student run micro-finance club at the University of Arizona. We give small dollar loans to people living below the poverty line so that they may start or grow an existing business. While our organization is focused on giving as many micro-loans as possible, we are also committed to community education and creating partnerships with global micro-finance institutions. To put on this event, we’ve worked closely with our current partner, Village Exchange, a non-profit in Ghana. Furthermore, the funds raised from the Hunger Banquet will be given to Village Exchange. With your help, we can fund villagers in Ghana who are trying to create a better life for themselves and for their families. We hope you can help make their goals come true, and maybe even learn a bit in the process.
